5 VISITABLE PAZOS
1 – PAZO DE OCA
Known as the Galician Versailles or the Generalife of the North. It is located in A Estrada (Pontevedra), just a few kilometers from Santiago de Compostela. In addition to the main building from the 18th century, it is known for its beautiful baroque gardens, lush, with a great variety of species, labyrinths… Its water channel “furrowed” by a stone boat is one of the most photographed sights by visitors. Today it belongs to the Casa Ducal de Medinaceli Foundation.
2 – PAZO DE RUBIANES
This stately estate was erected in the 15th century by the founder of Villagarcía de Arousa (Pontevedra). It was later rebuilt by his descendants in the 18th century using a style similar to that of French chateaus. Its exquisite and well-kept gardens have more than 4,500 specimens of camellias. This manor holds the distinction of Excellence awarded by the International Camelia Society. In addition, it contains a great variety of botanical species, extensive vineyards, ponds with water lilies, etc.
3 – PAZO FARAMELLO
This magnificent baroque mansion in the Compostela area was built with Italian influences. It is surrounded by a nineteenth-century garden of French inspiration, built in terraces over the canyon of the Angueira River. Entering its grounds is passing into another world, a particular universe of greenness that intoxicates and pays tribute to water, with ponds, pools, fountains, canals, natural pools.
4 – PAZO SANTA CRUZ DE RIVADULLA
Also known as Pazo de Ortigueira on the A Coruña bank of the Ulla River (Coruña). The building retains a certain monastic air due to its origin, it was erected in the 16th century by the canon of the Cathedral of Santiago. Fruit trees, vines, and olive trees were cultivated – its “olive promenade” is considered monumental – and its botanical and landscape value is undoubted due to its great variety of species – with special attention to camellias -, which sometimes go beyond the garden concept to become a lush forest, adorned with waterfalls, ponds.
5- PAZO DE MARIÑÁN
Located in the Bergondo area, A Coruña, it has its origins in the mid-15th century, although its main building features baroque architecture that seeks contrasts. Like a good Galician manor, it is all made of granite, maintaining similarities with some baroque buildings in Santiago de Compostela. Since 1972, its gardens and the manor house have been a historical-artistic and monumental complex, currently it can be visited as it is a Museum and course center.
